An Open Letter to My Aging First Dog

I’ll never know what I did to deserve my dog’s love

We first met when you were 6 months old. I was 12 years old. I had asked for you for as long as I remembered. After moving to city after city due to my parents job, and after a pair of guinea pigs, I really needed a best friend. A lady at church gave this lonely little girl to me and we were best friends.

You stayed with me through the high school bullying and snuggled me through every crush that ignored me (that was all of them). Then I went off to college, the only family member I cried about leaving was you. I pleaded with my parents to bring you on family weekends and you are the best.

You waited for me every time and never once doubted my return. Then I came home, but I had another friend in tow, a cat. You were jealous at first, but you accepted him. I felt guilty for not bringing you to my last year of school and getting my cat instead, but I only had time for a cat. Sure, you’re jealous and you can get grumpy when he jumps into my lap, but you tolerate him.

Now you’re 13, I’m 24 and we’re still best friends. You’re sitting at my feet in my office. You just nap the day away and great everyone with that perfect doggy smile as they walk into our busy office. They say that the average friendship lasts 7 years, but for 13 you’ve been my best friend and I know you will be until the end of your days. You’ve been here through all the breakups, backstabbing friends, and the life of being an entrepreneur. I didn’t realize how lonely the startup world was until I was a year in, but at least I will always have my dog.

I don’t know what I ever did to deserve you. When I was a kid, I was irresponsible and half the time my mother took care of you. I got distracted with movies, boys, and life. I left you for four years, coming back only in the summers. No matter how long I left or where I went, you were there waiting for me. You were just as glad to see me. Not once did you get angry that I had left you because your heart is overflowing with forgiveness. Every time I needed you, you were there.

As my best girl, you’re going to live the longest happiest life I can give you. Honestly, that’s why I’m working so hard, so my baby can have the world. I don’t have…
