iCon 2017 Reflection

When I think about high school and the month of August, the sound of the drum cadences echoing along concrete fields and the clang of weights against metal bars during the early hours of the late summer months serve as the ringing in of a new school year. This is my favorite time of the year, because it is a gentle reminder that we have the opportunity to once again make a difference in the lives of students.As our kids prepare to line yard markers, cheer across stadiums, and fill their backbacks with newly sharpened pencils and capped pens, we too have a responsibility to reflect, collaborate, and gear up for the great work that occurs in our schools. In our district, attending the iCon iPad fair is the place to be to ignite your educational fire and burn through sessions that support educators as they develop new ideas or revamp old ones with the “for educators, by educators” philosophy.

This year was a jammed packed day of training, but even in providing training I was reminded of serval lessons that will help me navigate the year:

Breakout Edu is more about the experience of working through the grit to mastery and knowing that it can’t be done alone. This was an amazing experience as this was my first time facilitating this activity. I loved watching everyone dig deep to discover clues and work together to discover strategies to be the first to breakout.

Connecting globally is paramount to developing teacher support. In the Mystery Google Hangout session we connected with Amanda Smith out of Lufkin ISD and it was really cool to watch participants ask questions and shape those questions to discover the location of the partnering community. I was reminded that teachers need to see that making these types of contracts are easy to setup and create for students.

All in all, this year’s iCon was another year of learning and growing together!
