EMPATHY

Ms. Neena was my Chemistry teacher at school (She’s my neighbor too ). She looks like a Chinese but is a typical Malayali who was brought up at Madhya Pradesh. The first time she taught me was in 2007 when I was in third grade. She was my Science teacher then. She always used to share lots of stories with pure elan, including incidents from her childhood which rose great excitement in our little minds.

Once while sharing such a story, she told us about the importance of being empathetic.

“Empathy is the ability to imagine oneself in another person’s place and see things through their perspective”

Both have an entirely different meaning. No one ever needs your sympathy and that is something most of us hate. The point is to understand the difference between empathy and sympathy.

After listening to her, I started to ponder about this word and about the reason for which she shared its meaning. I then understood something, empathy is about ‘putting oneself in another person’s shoes’.

Most of us never see things from another person’s perspective and that is the reason for many conflicts happening around us. A person who empathizes with others will feel, understand, and accept their emotions, motives, and concerns. This is what I seek.
