I started a piece a while back about being invisible and how it seems to me that no one else has this problem. It seems that the only time I am memorable is when I am a target for some creep that…
We spend a good portion of our lives trying to figure out our purpose. We try extracurriculars. We go to college/university. We try various careers.
What am I here for? What am I supposed to be doing? What path do I need to take to get there?
As I spend more and more time trying to figure out mine, I’m realizing that I don’t just have one purpose — I have many. And so do you.
It’s impossible to think that as we grow and evolve, our purpose won’t grow and evolve too. Our purpose changes every single year, every single week, every single day. It changes based on the scenarios we find ourselves in and the people we interact with every single day. It changes as we develop new interests and a new understanding of who we are.
The person you were at the age of four had a very different purpose than the one you do today. The one you have today will be very different than the one you have 20 years from now. Similarly, your purpose in your relationships with your parents is very different than the purpose you serve with your friends. Sometimes you’re meant to teach. Other times you’re meant to learn. Sometimes you’re meant to listen. Other times you’re meant to be heard.
Stop thinking: what’s next? How can I get closer to my purpose?
Instead, focus on the present. Ask yourself: what purpose am I serving in this very moment? How can I fully live into this purpose, right now? Because honestly, the purpose you’re serving today is leading you to the purpose you’ll serve tomorrow and each one is equally as important.
You are not one thing. You are a culmination of a lot of things — experiences, feelings, characteristics, passions, talents — and all of those things are beautifully designed to make up who you are. Thinking you, an incredibly intricate human being, were put on this earth to do one thing and one thing only is crazy.
You are not one dimensional and thus, your purpose is not one dimensional.
