TikTok and Its Possible Ages of Wonder.

Age is usually a concern when it comes to social media. I use TikTok on a regular basis when I want to waste 45+ minutes of my life. The videos are constantly new, funny, and not always censored. But have you ever wondered what TikTok’s main age group of users are? As a twenty-year-old myself the feed content I receive is usually of people close to my age. Is that the same for other ages as well? The answer to this question has to start somewhere. I researched the following data collection of age groups using TikTok. This specific data was collected from June of 2020. Even though it’s been months I feel the numbers are still relatively close. TikTok is still new and popular because of Covid. The most amount of users come from ages 10–19. It’s kind of surprising but at the same time not. I think what most people forget is that TikTok came from Musically. It used to be a lip-sync app that the majority of kids, not teens, or adults, or elders used. I remember watching my three little siblings make lip-sync videos on Musically and I remember thinking how embarrassing it is for an adult to be on there using the app. Once it shifted to TikTok my little sister’s account became a TikTok account. It took those kids’ accounts and shifted them to fit TikTok. I despised using TikTok for a while as well. I thought it was cringe and not for ages 18+. Once TikTok took over, it went from lip-syncing to content creating. It was a platform for multiple age groups and different contents. In the graphs, it says that ages 10-19 make up 32.5% of users and ages 20-29 make up the second-highest (within the U.S.). It looks like the older the person is, the less likely they’ll use the video-sharing platform. Ages 20–29 might outrank ages 10–19 in the future if TikTok figures out how to ban underage users. TikTok has come across multiple issues with underage users and censoring content in the last year. It’s prevalent to see as the rise of TikTok could also be the fall of TikTok. Are people willing to continue using TikTok as the years go on or will it slowly die out with the age of people who are trending? TikTok influencers range from teens to late twenties. I think it’s questionable to see how long TikTok last if the popular creators that people go on the app to see ages. At the same time, what makes TikTok kind of amazing is that even if these popular creator ages and stops making videos a new age might. Facebook has its charms of unnecessary statuses from friends and family members, while Instagram is a general flex of how pretty and expensive your day is going. TikTok showcases fake and real videos of people and moments within their lives. The word sonder is a great way, to sum it up. It’s a short glimpse into a stranger’s life and realizing they too are living a life as vivid and complex as your own. The decrease of users in the graphs with the age groups could mean a lot of things. But I hope TikTok lasts throughout the years. I hope as people age in this modern day of technology, communication, and media that they continue to share in their 50s the same way they did in their 20s.
