As the title suggests, I want to use Stephen Covey’s bestseller “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” to explore what being productive means to me and why it is something a lot of people struggle…

I was browsing the internet one afternoon after having a repeated thought going through my head. I want a dog.

I need a dog. It would be an excuse to go outside, go on more walks, and care for something besides myself. After all I could use a reason to get outside.

While online shopping is one of my favorite hobbies, I wanted to switch it up. I figured it would be a good idea to make an investment in something other than clothes, that would last much longer, and be more rewarding. I love looking at the latest trends, seeing what celeb’s are wearing, and checking out top trending sites like Fashion Nova. For that reason, I figured if I got a dog, I’d have something to dress up other than myself!

I googled “Pomskies for sale”

A website came up named “Premier Pups.” I was skeptical. Is this for real? I asked myself. The picture was too good to be true.

It was a cute little all white Pomsky staring at me through the computer screen. I have had a problem with impulse purchasing since the innocent age of 18 years old. I just got a new credit card with a $5,000 limit and thought there would be no better way to gain some extra points than by purchasing a puppy. After very little deliberation, I clicked “checkout”

I got a notification that read “confirmation! Important details regarding your purchase below.Your 8 week old Pomsky will be arriving March 23 in the Delta Cargo area at the Denver International Airport.

My dog already had airline miles? How awesome.

Those 2 weeks were the most exciting weeks of my life. I told everyone, I couldn’t wait.

Everyday I would watch dog training videos, getting ready for the un potty-trained furry guest that would be arriving shortly fresh off of Delta airlines. Unfortunately no amount of potty training videos could prepare me for what was in store.

The day had finally came! She had her food, water, and play pin with several toys waiting for her at her new forever home. I even prepared a spaghetti bolognese that would be ready to pop in the oven by the time we got back. The ingredients included garlic, onion, ground beef, tomatoes, basil, penne noodles and hot peppers. I placed it in the refrigerator and headed to the airport!

On the way there I said to my friend, “I feel like i’m about to give birth!” He laughed. This was the most exciting drive of my life. We arrived to the airport, and Roxy arrived soon after. I opened the small crate and she was hiding all the way in the back, tilting her little head at me, very scared and confused.

I quickly wrapped her in a pink blanket I brought from home and carried her to the car. She was so nervous, but also excited.

The moment we got back, she peed right in the middle of the living room! The mayhem that was occurring was of quite the surprise to my roommate, as well.

He had no idea that I was serious when I told him I was getting a puppy. Little did he know, I was very serious.

Roxy (my dogs name) would run around the house with her little paws banging against the hardwood floor a wee hours of the morning. She would squeak her squeaky toy outside of wills room, and found no problem with pooping outside of his door.

One morning I had arisen to a very upset roommate because he stepped in her poop. This could actually turn into an article on roommate wars, but I don’t want to get into it.

After plenty of training, Roxy quickly picked up on the simple commands like sit, down, fetch, no biting, no, and drop it. She has made astounding progress and has quickly gained 15 pounds! She is a very friendly dog who loves splashing around in just about any body of water, including toilets. Some friends have coined the nickname “mrs.toilet water” for her.

Although some people complain when they get a puppy they get no sleep at first, that wasn’t the case for me. From the first day, the only place Roxy would sleep without crying was next to me in my bed. She would sleep all through the night without making a single peep.

She is now fully potty trained and rings the bell when she wants to go outside. Her favorite food is watermelon, beef jerky, and bacon. We go on several walks a day and it’s nice to go outside with her. I would recommend getting a dog to anyone who has the time and energy to take care of one. They help you get on a schedule, and become more responsible because you always have to make sure you prioritize letting your dog out. It helps you become more aware about yourself, and what’s important to you. It also helps give you more exercise and have empathy for something besides yourself. Not to mention, dogs are very entertaining. You can teach them to do almost anything if you put in the time and effort. If you’re ever bored, you can just play with your dog!
