Way back when I was a boy, flying a kite meant first making something out of dowel, string, brown paper and flour-based glue. Later, when I was in business, it took on another meaning: issuing a dud cheque — and I received a few of those!

Nowadays it means something more: hi-tech power generation using high-performance aerofoils, GPS, Wifi and autopilots. Just to boil kettles.

Yes, a new form of green energy is taking flight. Kites are being used to harness the power of the world’s winds, and it could be a major breakthrough in renewable energy. Wind power has been around for a long time, but traditional wind turbines have drawbacks. They take up a lot of space, they’re expensive to install, and they can be dangerous to birds.

Kites offer a solution to all of these problems. They are small and easy to install, portable in containerised form and do not require the deep, expensive foundations that static wind turbines demand. Also, they can easily be installed offshore on barges.

They also don’t take up much space, which is important given the limited amount of land available for renewable energy development. Many farmers have turned their land over to solar arrays and there is little that they can do with the land beneath the solar panels. With kite power they can still use the land for farming, although the green energy yield is lower.

One of the biggest challenges facing kite-based wind power is finding a way to store the energy that is generated. Current battery technology is not well suited to storing large amounts of energy, so kite-based wind turbines will need to be connected to the grid in order to be practical.
