What is mulch mowing?

Mowing the lawn is one of those chores that seems to have only one way of being done: run contraption over lawn; catch grass in back of contraption; empty cut grass into green waste bin; repeat. But what you may not know, is there is another way you could be mowing your lawn that eliminates the need to fill your green bin with grass clippings, and helps to keep your lawn lush and green all year round.

Mulch mowing is a lawn care system that returns fresh grass clippings directly to your lawn, and with them, much of the nutrients they carry. The name ‘mulch mowing’ is a little misleading, as the system actually works more like a fetilising compost for your lawn.

The hard work of returning the grass clippings is done by a mulch mower, which uses special blades to first cut the grass like a mower with a catcher, and then cuts those clippings into super fine pieces before they are blown down on to the lawn to be reabsorbed by the soil.

Did you know that grass clippings are almost entirely water? Because of this, the very fine clippings that are forced back down towards the soil dry out very quickly and are absorbed into the soil, redistributing the nutrients they contained, feeding them directly back into your lawn. This layer of clippings acts as a barrier between the soil and the harsh Australian sun — helping to prevent burning, as well as a dried-out lawn.

The best way to mulch mow your lawn is with a mulching mower. You can buy mulching attachments for your regular lawn mower, but these attachments are usually not as efficient at shredding the lawn clippings as a dedicated mower.
