The Boredom of Monotony

It gets boring after a while, doesn’t it?

The sunrise every morning, the birds chirping or the sunset every evening.

The beginning of a new season fills us up with tremendous joy until a few months into it starts to feel boring again and we desperately crave for the beginning of a new season.

Most days our surroundings are so absent and we are on the track of the constant hustle culture that the sound of birds or the sunrise every morning goes unnoticed for days. It doesn’t feel magical anymore.

The first rain brings joy, but the second, the third, feels mundane.

I do not know if the mere circumstances get boring or the fact that we perceive them all to be the same every day, is what makes them boring.

Back in the year 2021 on April 21st, I wrote in my journal the following:

“These mornings of my personal pandemic haven’t gotten boring to me yet. Every bird chirping and every bee buzzing soothes my longed heart. As though it has longed for even the traffic horns of the day.

I feel like a completely different person, the one I found beneath the sheets.”

This was a time I had returned home from the hospital after my COVID treatment.

My parents wanted me to soak in a ton of Vitamin D, and hence, we’d spend time on our terrace every morning where I found that this normal wasn’t boring at all.

Although I can’t really say what normal means for everyone and it is tough to get down that road.

But in my perspective, it is when you have accomplished your basic needs.

The days after I was recovered were some of the most magical days that I had ever experienced. Which is when I re-evaluated my whole belief system and what exactly I wanted from life.

I believed in a very different world. And I’m not saying it was a very drastic shift or it was completely out of the world experience or magical. It somewhere came from within because I believe that we already are the person who we ought to be somewhere deep down. And we just discover it through the journey.

A ton of articles suggest that boredom may occur when our energy isn’t channelled into an outlet that provides meaning or fulfilment. It is a state of failing to find meaning.

And while I may agree to it or not, I believe it makes sense. When I admire a pretty sunset or the phases of the moon, I find joy in my mere existence. That is the meaning I find in it. And the pretty sunset just exists there without a care in this world, but my meaning of it changes my world completely.

It was quite normal for me to feel connected back to my family and nature after that experience. But, to hold onto that experience and move forward, is what has made me more aware and mindful of the other experiences that I’m experiencing.

It is not that I would never get bored again, or that everything should be perfect and I should be grateful all the time, is not the goal. The goal is to be aware and to reflect on the experience that you’ve experienced in the past and how it has changed you and your perspective.

And although your boredom might encourage you to do and try different things, it must not interfere with your beliefs of the mundane life as not magical or worthy. New things and new experiences will definitely give you the rush, but your normal (boring) life will always be your home.
