Lightfoot on the Line in Chicago

On a rising tide of crime in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is facing the toughest race of her political career.

The number of shootings in Chicago has also increased in recent years. In 2019, there were 2,139 shootings in the city. In 2020, there were 3,261 shootings, an increase of more than 52%.

Carjackings have also become a major issue in Chicago. In 2019, there were 603 carjackings in the city. In 2020, there were 1,417 carjackings, an increase of more than 135%.

Crime in Chicago has a complicated history, but it’s hard to see the statistics in recent years as anything but an abject failure of the local government.

In the early 1990s, Chicago experienced a surge in violent crime, including homicides, due to factors such as gang violence, the crack cocaine epidemic, and economic decline. The homicide rate peaked in 1992 with 943 homicides, one of the highest numbers in the city’s history.
