The Night of Power in Ramadan and how we can witness it

The Night of Power is known as Laylatul Qadr in Arabic and it is to be found on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, which is now.

Its main importance is the fact that this is the night that the Quran was said to have begun to be revealed.

The Quran was sent down from the seven heavens to the lowest heaven and to the angel Gabriel peace be upon him. It was then revealed to the Prophet Muhammad that peace is upon him.

For this reason, it is a sacred Holy Night.

The Quran tells us about Laylatul Qadr in a short chapter:

So this chapter explains what the benefits of this night are.

It is described as better than a thousand months.

That is because the lifespan of our generation is shorter than nations in the past apparently.

People of previous times and nations would live longer and had more chances to do good deeds.

We have been given this one night in the year that makes up for the fact that we do not have as much time or life span.

So doing worship on this night is better than doing worship on one thousand nights.

This means not only do we get the reward for a thousand nights but more than that.

A thousand nights is more than eighty years in human lifespan, so it is like a lifetime itself.

On that night the angels of the decree will descend to the earth.

For this reason, there will be a feeling of peace on this night.

We have been ordered to look for this night in the last ten days of Ramadan.

Many scholars hold that the night may change from year to year, however, there is quite strong evidence that it would be most likely on the twenty-seventh night of the month.

Therefore, anyone trying to catch Layla Tul qadr should try to worship on each of the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd-numbered nights such as 21, 23,25,27,29

If we cannot do every night then, especially 25, 27,29 and if we can only do one night then the twenty seventh is most often encouraged and there is evidence for this night in some sayings.

This is of course from the sunset time to the time of the fajr or the dawn prayer.

Although we cannot know exactly when Laylatul Qadr will happen, as there is always disagreement, we can go by some of the signs mentioned to help us have an idea.

This question was asked by Aisha may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wassalam, that if she finds laylatul qadr what should she say? So he told her to say:

It is not said how many times to say it, so we can say it as much — or as little — as we are able, but with conviction and sincerity.

Some other deeds:

Women often ask what they can do on this night if they are not in a state of prayer. They can do everything but not touch the Quran. They can read from the Quran which has more translations than Islamic text or listen to the Quran.

Also, she can do tasbih, supplicate, give charity, and so forth (but doing i'tikaf and going to the mosque are not permitted at that time).

The Night of Power is only once a year, but it provides the reward of a lifetime of worship, so let us try and catch it by staying vigilant and doing the good deeds that we can reward.
