When My Husband Went to Hospital

I got to sleep with whomever I pleased

Initially devastated when my gorgeous DH (dear husband) was taken into hospital for an emergency appendectomy earlier this month, I soon found a silver lining in my cloud.

No one in bed to object to my devices.

No, I’m not talking about sex toys! I’m referring to my mobile phone on which lives endless entertaining apps…

For example, my meditation app has been one of the best investments I’ve made this year. It has loads of wonderful meditations, master classes, soundscapes, and sleep stories — which I especially enjoy.

Unfortunately, my husband does not like devices in bed, so I’ve learned to sneak my sleep stories by plugging my headphones into one ear only (the ear furthest away from my husband) and listening from my phone under the pillow.

Then a medical emergency meant I was alone in bed. For ten whole days.

What an earth was I going to do with myself?

One night I woke up around 4 am and sighed deeply as I remembered anew I was all alone in our king-size bed.

Then I remembered: I was alone in our king-size bed!

Gleefully, I switched on the night light, grabbed my phone and started scrawling through the sleep stories; I have a few favourites; Matthew McConaughey reading a story called Wonder, A Love Letter to Africa read by Danai Gurira, and John McEnroe reading The Rules of Tennis which generally puts me to sleep in about one minute flat.

I also love the myriad journey tales, which mioght take me on a train to Norway or Britain’s land’s end. There is the gorgeous story OceanMoon read by Laura Dern, about a little girl who visits the sea for the first time… Sadly, though I’ve listened to it several times, I’ve never managed to stay awake to find out how she felt when she got there, One night, it may happen.

Then there are the stories that take us to other words; outer space, or a faraway desert, or back in time.
